Creating a Kitchen Tile Backsplash
When remodeling a kitchen, one of the areas that may require your attention is the backsplash. The backsplash is the area directly above the stove that is typically decorated in some way. It also plays a practical purpose by keeping grease and food off of the wall itself. If you are remodeling, you may be unsure of what type of backsplash materials to use or how to have them installed. Here are a few tips on making sure that your backsplash looks just right when you’re done with kitchen remodeling.
Consider a Pattern
When it comes to making sure that your backsplash looks great, you may want to consider installing tile in a pattern. On most backsplash areas, the installer puts the tile on in a pattern so as to provide some kind of interesting visual element and a focal point for the kitchen. For example, the installer could make a medallion pattern on the backsplash area or do some other type of geometric pattern. If subway tile is used, the installer could use a staggered pattern. Many backsplash areas also have a border installed around the outside to really bring out the center of the structure.
Use Glass Tile
One option that you may want to consider for this project is glass tile. With glass kitchen tile, you’ll be able to create a completely unique look for your backsplash area. Glass tile looks very elegant, shiny and unlike any other kind of tile. Although glass is usually a little bit more expensive than other types of tile, the backsplash is such a small area, that it probably won’t be that big of a cost.
With glass tile, the installer typically has to use white adhesive because you can see the adhesive back behind the tile once it is installed. A special type of non-sanded grout also has to be used with this type of tile. Glass tile can come in the form of small squares, or it could come in many different shapes.
Subway Tile
Subway tile is another option that is very popular on backsplash spaces. Subway tile is small, rectangular tile that typically has a very smooth surface. A common size for subway tile is 3″ x 6″. Usually, this tile is installed in a horizontal manner and creates a very unique look.
Ceramic or Porcelain
In many cases, you may want to install ceramic or porcelain tile on the backsplash. Ceramic and porcelain are very common materials that are installed on backsplashes, and they come in many different colors and styles. You can use smooth textured tile or rough, depending on your preference.
Seal the Tile
When you install a backsplash, you also need to consider whether the tile needs to be sealed or not. If you install glass tile, you won’t have to worry about sealing the tile because it is impervious. With certain other types of tile, you also will not have to worry about sealing the tile.
However, if you install stone, ceramic, or porcelain, you may want to seal the tile. This way, when you cook and get any kind of liquid on the tile, it won’t be able to get into the surface of the tile. When you seal up the tile, you won’t have to worry about the tile being stained either. Once you seal the tile, give it time to dry before using the area. You may also want to put multiple coats of sealer on the tile as well.
After you get your new tile backsplash installed, you can start using your newly remodeled kitchen again. The new backsplash will be the focal point of the new kitchen area.
